I've been busy with work. This is more a post for people like you who
asked for a “last message”, whether it is a “philosophy” or an
acknowledgement. I think it wouldn't be a great idea for me to write
something that sounds generic. I've expressed my motivations, I'll
express them now again: a) There’s no over‑centralised body for Bitcoin,
b) The governance model should be market driven and not enforced by any
institution. The solution that we have right now – consensus from the
developers and client‑upgrades – works. If it stops, an improved
solution will arise (eventually a soft‑fork or a hard‑fork). I have a
strong belief in the theory that the best system is one that minimizes
the amount of control one party has.

If I'm not shocked that there will be new people with fresh perspectives
changing Bitcoin, that’s because I think the future is very bright for
a system that is open source, incremental and is able to adapt. A lot
of how Bitcoin is built right now hinges on code, integrity, community
and resilience. Those things won’t vanish because some individuals are
gone.

Now, I shouldn't say that we have the same exact same problems as we
did in 2008; we still have some things to improve – transaction fees,
privacy, scaling – but that assumes we want to alter the network design.
If that is the case, we should keep it simple and not try to over‑engineer
solutions. We need to maintain the principle that anyone can start a
new “Bitcoin‑like” system, with its own set of rules, but the original
system should be left to survive on its own. That was the point of writing
the code the way I did: modular and flexible.

I'll continue to watch the development, but I won't be a part of it.
Hopefully the community will produce better and better ways to keep
the integrity of the system as the world evolves. Thank you all for
the journey.

2. Context & Achtergrond

3. Betekenis & Impact

De belangrijkste boodschappen uit de post zijn:

  1. Decentralisatie boven alles: Een “over‑centraliseerd” bestuur is een bedreiging.
